Review on Observation Practice

You have just made observations on the passage in John 21:15-17 - specifically on the repeats, comparisons, and parallels. How did it go?

If you did the exercise, you would have noticed some obvious repetitions. Ok, now without looking at that passage, state exactly what was repeated - verbatim.

Here are some multiple choice questions to see if you really were paying attention:

  1. What was the question that Jesus asked that disciple?

"Simon, son of John, Do you love me?" was repeated exactly the same way three times.
"Do you love me" was in all three times, but "Simon, son of John" was only in one of them.
"Do you love me" was in all three times, but "more than these" was in one of them.

  2. How did that disciple answer each time?

"Of course I love You" was repeated in exactly the same way three times.
"You know that I love You" was repeated in exactly the same way three times.
"I love you more than these" was repeated in exactly the same way three times.
"I love You" was repeated three times, but in the last time, "I would even die for you" was added.

  3. What was the reason given for the disciple's being 'grieved'?

He was asked the same question three times.
He was asked to be a shepherd three times.
He was told to be a shepherd three times.
    None of the above.
If you are not sure of the answers to the questions above, go back and look at the John 21 passage again.

After you have looked at the passage and are sure about the answers to the questions above, click here : + -

Now you have noticed that each time Peter answered "You know that I love You". What do you think? Why did Peter answer that way? Why didn't he just say "I love you"?

And the answer to the last question is 'none of the above'. Look closely! He was upset 'because He said to him the third time, "Do you love Me?"' Not three times, but the third time. Is there a difference? Any particular reason it was stated that way?

Asking questions is one way to help us see more. What other questions can you ask? There's at least one other question you can ask!

Often times the treasures are buried in the ordinary. It takes patience and digging to uncover them. In fact, there is more to observe in this passage that will open up a world of new insights. And we'll come back to this later.

Have you ever thought about this: 'to find out the meaning of a Bible passage" - does it mean to find out what it means to you, or what it meant to the original readers and recipients of the Scriptures?
